Ocean-set thriller co-stars Vincent Cassel, John Gallagher Jr., and Jessica Henwick

Kristen Stewart is quite literally in too deep in the first trailer for her upcoming thriller “Underwater.”

Set seven miles below the ocean’s surface, the film follows a group of researchers who must scramble to stay alive after enduring a terrifying earthquake which leaves their sea lab in ruins and many of the crew injured. Seismic activity turns out to be the least of the group’s worries, however, after the group comes to realize they’ve awakened a nefarious inhuman presence threatening to turn them all into chum.

“What is happening?,” a buzz-cut sporting Stewart exclaims at one point in the trailer amid a montage of startling explosions, dark underseas encounters, and plenty of other water-filled shenanigans.

Directed by William Eubank (“The Signal”), “Underwater” was written by Brian Duffield and Adam Cozad. The film stars Vincent Cassel (“Black Swan”), John Gallagher Jr. (“The Newsroom”), Jessica Henwick (“Iron Fist”), and “Deadpool’s” T.J. Miller in addition to Stewart, who also has a leading role in Sony’s much-anticipated “Charlie’s Angels” sequel, arriving in November.

“Underwater” opens in theaters on Jan. 10, 2020.
