VIDEO: John David Washington and Robert Pattinson Team Up in Trippy, Time-Bending ‘Tenet’ Trailer

Christopher Nolan thriller co-stars Michael Caine, Elizabeth Debicki, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson

“BlacKkKlansman” star John David Washington teams up with Stern Show veteran Robert Pattinson to save the world from a trippy, existential threat in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming mind-bender “Tenet.”

The trailer begins conventionally enough with Washington’s character training to become some sort of super spy, but things take a turn for the weird after he seemingly dies and is brought back to life. “You chose to die instead of giving up your colleagues,” a senior spook (Martin Donovan) tells him. “That test you passed, not everybody does. Welcome to the afterlife.”

Washington’s first mission has him teaming up with Pattinson to take on a nefarious force hellbent on destroying the world by manipulating time. Before long the duo finds themselves dodging bullets and car accidents both forwards and backward in time.

Written and directed by Nolan (“Dunkirk,” “The Dark Knight” trilogy), “Tenet” co-stars Michael Caine, Kenneth Branagh, Elizabeth Debicki, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The film is one of several high-profile projects Pattinson has coming down the pike; he’s also slated to play the Caped Crusader in Matt Reeves’ 2021 reboot “The Batman.”

When Robert sat down with Howard in 2017, the former “Twilight” star revealed he hadn’t yet entertained the notion of starring as a superhero on the big screen because he was reluctant to sign back on to a multi-picture franchise. Check out a clip from their conversation (below).

“Tenet” opens July 17.
